But whereas Passing centered on the complex dynamic—which ranges from enmity to a kinship of sorts—between two light-skinned Black women in s New York, Quicksand follows the experiences of one woman, Helga Crane, whose restlessness sees her moving from Chicago to Harlems before venturing out to Copenhagen. Helga, daughter to a white Danish mother and an African-American father, has always felt like an outsider. At the beginning of Quicksand Helga is a schoolteacher in Naxos but feels increasingly dissatisfied by her environment. That was the crux of the whole matter. A deeply affecting story, Larsen's first novel is remarkable for its prose and its themes. Protagonist Helga Crane, armed with her own standards of morality and reason, faces stiff opposition--herself--in her quest to become an autonomous individual. Read full review. Terrible book with no lessons learned. I did not enjoy reading a single page for it and if I did not have to for a college class I never would.

Helga Crane is the aloof and refined mixed-race daughter of a Danish white mother and a West Indian black father.
