Indeed, Risby portrays Walter's downtrodden volatility with particular aplomb. Then there's Walter's wife Ruth Leontyne Mbele-Mbongwhose barely suppressed sense of despair is riveting.

A Raisin in the Sun Has Gaps But Is Still an Emotional Stunner

Walter's sister Beneatha Siaira Harris shines as a mouthy dreamer juggling feminism, college, and assimilation. Callender is a sure-footed director, but there were times when the staging was wonky; characters spent too much time facing each other and not the audience, which made some of the dialogue difficult to hear. The play's pivotal heartache scene with the insurance check was strangely downplayed. The understatement didn't drown out the sentiment, but because the rest of the play is otherwise dramatically amped, it seemed a bit odd. Nonetheless, Raisin proves to be an emotional stunner.
