Did William Shakespeare Actually Exist? For over years many intelligent, highly educated men and women have questioned whether William Shakespeare wrote the works attributed to him. Over the years, numerous 'candidates' have been proposed as the true author. Often dismissed by the orthodox Shakespeare establishment in Britain and America as crackpots, the Anti-Stratfordians, as they are known, have become increasingly visible and numerous during the past thirty years. This is a very interesting though slim book. It takes the major figures who might have written the Shakespeare plays including Shakespeare himselfand presents detailed pro and cons Did William Shakespeare Write the Plays and why that person could I had always thought that Edward de Vere might have written the plays, but after reading the cons, I have to say I now dismiss him.
It's fun to watch all the contenders get shot down. I did not particularly care for the author's prose style. An editor should have cleared out the needless repetitions. The phrase "Italianate comedies and triumphalist histories" occurs way too many times. We do not need to be told more than once that a "pinner" is a dogcatcher. It's as if each little section had been written independently of each other and the author please click for source that he had already stated something. The editor might also have pointed out that we "pore" through documents, not "pour.
People in the airport or on the plane will probably be impressed to see you reading something that should be heavy, but which is really light and breezy. You might have fun thinking each new candidate being presented is going to be the winner, but those cons always seem to outweigh the pros. Shakespeare wrote the plays, buddy. As much is known about Shakespeare as is known about other playwrights of his time.

Except Ben Jonson. Very little.
We do, of course, have facts about Shakespeare's life: less in Stratford then in London, but he spent much more time in London than in Stratford. We know he was born there, that he married Ann Hathaway when he was 18 and she was 26, that she was pregnant, and that the delivery in November, gave them a daughter, whom they named Susanna.]
The question is interesting, I too will take part in discussion.
