Masur uses the eclipse as a metaphor for Antebellum America--strained under the opposing forces of light and dark, slavery and freedom, nature and machines, religion and politics. As an historian, I am trained to look for a scholarly thesis statement early in the text. Masur omits a formal thesis statement, choosing instead to let the narrative speak for itself.
Ratings and Reviews
In my opinion, he does the narrative a great service, TThe it from the constraints of academia. This is not to say that Masur's book does not belong in the catalog of scholarly writings on the subject--it does--a glance at Masur's extensive bibliography would allay any doubts to the contrary.
Masur's writing style simply makes the subject matter approachable, both for the scholar and layman alike. If you think you have a Oc understanding of the events that led to the Civil War or if your understanding is limited to the explanations offered in your high school textbookthen Masur's book is worth a read.
