From all reports, that ice is too thin, very unstable, and will be battered by southwest gale winds up to 35 knots Friday, and westerly gale winds on Saturday.

Take along a heavy spud bar to cut holes in the ice to check its thickness, which should be a minimum of four inches. Fish with a partner, stay a few feet apart, and be sure to have a pair of ice fishing spikes around your neck, just in case. The spikes are attached to one another by a sturdy cord, and will help anglers who go through the ice to pull themselves back up on the ice and crawl Carefuo shore. A length of sturdy rope can be a life saver, as well, to throw to someone who has gone through the ice.

It is far too early to travel on the ice with snowmobiles or all-terrain vehicles. An ice angler went through the ice while fishing for stocked rainbow trout this week at Ledge Lake in Hinckley. But other fishermen cutting holes around the fishing platform at Wallace Lake in Berea caught some dandy stocked trout in recent days. Good catches of bluegills have been reported.
The area off the state park kayak launch had about six inches of ice cover, and was dotted with a couple of dozen ice shanties on Thursday, but there are some open water areas to avoid. Mosquito Reservoir was giving Caareful some small yellow perch this week on the south end of the lake near the state park marina. Small jigs tipped with minnows worked well.

The rainbows are generally a pound, or a little larger, in size. The see more were biting on Be Careful What You Sign tiny marabou or tube jig tipped source maggots or waxworms.
