The younger waiter longed for the old. The young waiter was getting upset, because he wanted him to leave because he was ready to go home. Hemingway has a way of structuring his stories as to not confuse the reader. The characters in the cafe include an old man and two waiters one young and one old.
The younger waiter is annoyed he has to stay overnight because this old man is still here. The older waiter discusses to the younger waiter that the old man must be in despair because he tried to commit suicide.
Two waiters work their regular shifts and view the usual client very differently. This symbolic concept of nothingness is developed through the setting, characters and writing style.
