It was the first legislation in Australia that enabled Indigenous people to claim land rights for country where traditional ownership could be proven. For almost years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had been losing rights to their lands as white settlers encroached. This Act was the first step to enabling Indigenous Australians to regain these rights. She also started an online petition that gained about 15, signatures. Indigenous activists have long called for native land rights to be recognised, and to revert to names given by traditional landowners who can trace their lineage back 60, years, instead of those given by Rihts settlers. As protests over racial inequality swept across many parts of the world earlier this year, Australia saw a renewed push for renaming landmarks and places.
