Serendipity plays an important role in the cross-fertilization of ideas and is thus the base of many innovations. Numerous successful products resulted from serendipitous findings. Other well-known examples include Viagra, penicillin, and X-rays. Over the past decades, workplace designers have become increasingly knowledgeable about how to socially engineer workplaces to stimulate close encounters that spark innovation. Famous examples being the homey offices of Google, which invite employees to wander and linger.
