It shows how slaves and sugar produced economic and political change in Eighteenth-century Ireland and discusses the role of Irish emigrants in slave societies in the Caribbean and North America. Written by her son Charles, this volume tells the story of Harriet Novell Stowe, including her childhood, early married life, time in poverty, travels and successful writing career.

In her early adulthood, Harriet worked alongside her older sister, Click, as a teacher. Her earliest published work was a children's geography book penned with her sister's name in Inshe married Calvin Stowe and wrote many articles for religious periodicals while raising her seven children.

During this time, she also i several volumes of poetry, travel books and children's stories. Stowe also wrote at least ten novels, of which the most famous is Uncle Tom's Cabin, published in An extremely controversial work, Stowe became famous after its release.
