Eleven studies consisting of DM patients and non-DM patients were included in our meta-analysis. Subsequently, the subgroup analysis also obtained consistent conclusions. Considerable evidence suggests that successful percutaneous coronary intervention PCI of CTO lesions is associated with a greater improvement of symptoms, quality of life, and left ventricular function compared with failed CTO-PCI or initial medical treatment MT alone [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Therefore, current guidelines recommending CTO-PCI, such as the IIa B recommendation, should be considered in patients with severe angina resistant to MT or with a large ischaemic area in the territory of the occluded vessel [ 7 ]. Diabetes mellitus DM , a well-known coronary artery disease CAD risk factor, is associated with a greater atherosclerotic burden, including diffuse CAD, multivessel disease, and heavy coronary artery calcifications [ 8 , 9 ]. The existence of DM could also have a detrimental effect on collateral circulation development and microcirculation function [ 5 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].
