The 5th Iowa Cavalry was originally raised as the Curtis Horse in Omaha, Nebraskaon September 5,and later absorbed cavalry companies from IowaMissouri and Minnesota and then transferred to Iowa state service per an order of December 20, Organized as Curtis Horse by order of General Fremont. Louis, Mo. Duty at Benton Barracks, Mo. Moved to Fort Henry, Tenn. Patrol duty during battle of Fort Donelson.
