The opening of law term address has been used by NSW chief justices, including Chief Justice Bathurst, to outline significant issues for the year ahead. The NSW Supreme Court was one of the first to adopt a new policy to deal with sexual harassment and the handling of complaints against judicial officers and staff. He noted the Edelman Trust Baromete r had reported that no Australian institution was seen as both competent and ethical. The legal profession has had a significant problem with sexual harassment. Legal workplaces feature many risk factors for sexual harassment including power imbalances, systems of patronage, interconnectedness, long hours and the reality that men continue to hold most senior positions. When we recognise and accommodate the pressures many practitioners face in juggling a career in the law with family responsibilities. Chief Justice Bathurst said trust in the judiciary was compromised by poor behaviour in the legal profession. That was especially so in relation to Indigenous people. Not merely the ones living in cities or those taught from a young age that judges will protect them and their communities or those who speak English as their first language.
