On February 14, , a gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida , killing 17 people [note 2] and injuring 17 others. A suspect, later identified as year-old Nikolas Cruz, was arrested without incident about an hour later in nearby Coral Springs [5] and subsequently charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.
