This is the final post from a joint memoir written by Selina Molteno and Robin Cohen about their period in Nigeria, September —September , which was framed by the Nigerian Civil War. The chapter tells a personal story and also provides some more general insight into those tumultuous years. Here they describe how they managed to get food and drink, acknowledging that whatever little travails they experienced, many others were struggling to survive. When one is in the midst of a civil war, getting potable water and a secure supply of food, particularly food that is familiar, does become something of a preoccupation. To save scarce foreign exchange, the federal government had banned all but essential imports. Enough then to buy guns, but not imported rice. The basics of life were available. Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has warned that a The Nigerian Civil War war could break out from the conflict between herders link local communities across the country if the issue is not addressed correctly.
