His parents both had an extreme love for learning and especially for literature. As a young man Bierce put his love for writing and journalism aside in order to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Bierce was a soldier in the 9th Indiana Infantry and served as an engineer mapping out battlefields. Bierce fought in the Battle of Shiloh and obtained a serious head wound during the Battle of Rich Mountain in His injury effectively ended his military service.

The end of his military service marked the beginning of his writing career. Bierce lived in San Francisco, London and the Dakota Territory where he worked as a journalist and editor of local newspapers.
