Imperialism and racism solidified cultural barriers. Class warfare remained as prominent as ever. Writers and artists continually challenged traditional notions about sensuality and morality.

Amidst all the turmoil, women began to take their first tentative steps toward equality and independence. This first era of Sexiism found a voice in the works of many of its contemporary authors, from Judith Sargent Murray to Mary Shelley.
