Set in and around Missoula, Montana , the story follows two sons of a Presbyterian minister, one studious and the other rebellious, as they grow up and come of age in the Rocky Mountain region during a span of time from roughly World War I to the early days of the Great Depression , including part of the Prohibition era. The Maclean brothers, Norman and Paul, grow up in Missoula, Montana with their father, Presbyterian minister John, from whom they learn a love of fly fishing for trout in the Blackfoot River. Norman and Paul are home taught and must adhere to the strict moral and educational code of their father. As young men, the brothers navigate a dangerous waterfall. Norman leaves to attend college at Dartmouth ; when he returns six years later, he finds that Paul has become a skilled fisherman. Norman attends a July 4th dance, and meets Jessie Burns. The main theme in the story is that of source and how love functions inside a family. Norman and Paul were born and raised in a very close-knit family who cared more about their family members than anything else. The father loves his children and loves to spend time with them fishing or doing other activities and the mother is willing to get over everything bad her children do just to Themes In A River Runs Through It her affection. But the type of love that is extraordinary is the one between Norman and Paul, the two brothers. Even though the two were completely different, they never let their differences tear them apart and the relationship between them only became stronger as time went by. Even in their adulthood, the boys were always willing to drop whatever they were doing and go help their family and sibling.
