Mark Herman/John Boyne Interview The Striped Pajamas By Mark Herman.Rewatched Feb 07 Challenge 8 - set during a historic war.
The main intention of this film, similar to the book it is based on, is to depict the Holocaust through the eyes of a young boy. Does it achieve this? He does not know or understand the horrors of what is happening around him but we, the audience, do and as it progresses the truth catches up to him.
Mark Herman has done a good job directing it. Given the difficult subject matter you expect it to be bleak and it is, especially Syriped ending. There is much slow build up early on, as if the film tries to cram in as much background information about Nazi Germany to suffice the audience before the story really does take effect.
Additionally, is it meant for a young audience? The book always was and is taught in schools today, but the film does have a 12A certificate. I think it is aimed for a mature audience, especially when discussing the ending.
