Refugees have been a feature of human society from its beginnings. Envy, acquisitiveness, territorial ambition, greed, war, famine, disease, floods, earthquakes, volcanos, tornados and climate change — all these have contributed to forced mass movements of people across the planet. Often, the sheer scale of migration and its accompanying wake of disaster and premature death deadens sensibilities and sympathies. Focusing on a particular story often provides a better idea of the larger picture: the microcosm becomes the macrocosm. Dinesen is the pen name of Karen Blixen , best known for Out of Africa , the memoir of life on her coffee farm in the Ngong Hills of Kenya. Babette serves the sisters quietly, efficiently and with humility for many years. The sisters assume that Babette will return to her motherland. But she has a request to make of them: she would like to prepare a special dinner for the birthday of the late dean, with his now aged and very small flock as the guests. At first surprised and conflicted — food in their view is merely sustenance, not a staple of celebration or joy — eventually the sisters relent and grant Babette her wish. Through her merchant shipman nephew, Babette orders the ingredients from France. Babettes Feast

Babettes Feast

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It has changed the subtle and spiritual message of the film, turning it into a cheap pseudo-Christian "religious" movie with occasional overtones of sleeze! Hardly what it says in the original. I speak both French Babettes Feast Danish, and the subtitles are almost perfectly translated.

Ratings and Reviews

Never once, in the original script, does anyone say "Jesus" Babettes Feast even "merciful Lord. Real Ch ristianity, as portrayed in the film, where Catholic and Evangelical spiritualities are at play with each other and with the naive humanity of the villagers, is calm, natural, beautiful and reflective.

My wife hates art flicks. But she loved this one. This great little film is a comedy in an older sense.

Babettes Feast

No knock down guffaws, no fast camera cuts, nothing like that. It is just a simple tale of love and spirituality and perseverance. The acting is quite engaging, and you'll notice that the kid who helps Babette at the end was the model for the kid in "Ratatouille. The religious content becomes the context for the lives of the people there. A good way to watch is on a quiet evening, with a glass of wine. The Babettes Feast can be a bit distracting, and how they clash with the dubbed English leads to some o dd, unintended humor. In all, a gentle and pointed film about Babettes Feast meaning of life and it is not wafer-thin. Danish director Gabriel Axel's understated but finely detailed work centers on the preparation and consumption of an exquisite Gallic meal, a sensuous labor of love which has a healing effect on the austere sect and the Frenchwoman who prepared it.
