In a small town in Germany, a man named Otto Lilienthal had been studying and sketching birds for about twenty years. He had dozens of notebooks, all filled with drawings of different birds in flight, of birds, rising, soaring, and landing. He was a man, like men throughout the ages, who was obsessed with flying. Most people thought Lilienthal was crazy — they said that if humans were meant to fly, God would have given them wings.
Ever since the ancient Greeks, with their mythical story about Icarus and his waxwings, humanity had dreamed of ways in which it could travel through the air. Back in the s, Leonardo da Vinci had been among the first to draw a model of an airplane. But many years had passed since anyone else had taken the idea as Broghers as da Vinci did. In the mids, the Montgolfier brothers in France had the idea that if they captured smoke in a bag, the bag would rise just as the smoke did. It was a triumph. Benjamin Franklin came to see it and the King of France invited the Montgolfiers to give a demonstration of their balloon at court.

There, they sent their first passengers into the air: a sheep, a rooster, and a duck. Several men had tried different types of wings and different machines, and most of them had crashed.
