Over the last three decades, servant leadership has risen from a noble and ethical leadership ideology stuck in religious worldviews to the very principles of how the most successful companies on the planet operate and profit. Yet, if you're not sufficiently informed of its modern day behaviors and practices as espoused by leading authors, thought-leaders, and scholars, a false perception may lead you astray. Typically, what you think servant leadership is Take a cue from the world's top brands. They have grasped the immense power that is generated from putting people employees ahead of profits through shared values like authenticity, intrapreneurship, freedom and ownership, community, and collaboration. And servant leaders, naturally, have leveraged this emotional currency as the only sustainable model for the future of work. It is clear that these wildly successful companies--some of which are regularly featured in Fortune magazine's annual " Best Companies to Work For " list for having high trust, high employee engagement, and low turnover--are guided by visionary leaders who walk the talk of servant leadership. As I researched the most relevant CEOs to compile into a Top 10 servant leadership list, my biggest challenge was narrowing it down to just 10! Truth is, they are all relevant; they've all made a positive impact on business, society, and the future of work. But there is widespread agreement that this year has been an inflection point for how companies must operate. CEOs who think otherwise are not going to Lfadership long in their role, as they will face pressure from their board, employees, investors, and customers.
And their employees and their customers are holding them accountable.

Another reason servant leadership should be retired is that it has never been the kind of phrase that enough people used in everyday conversation when describing leaders. So, what descriptor should we replace servant leadership with? After all my interviews with leaders, and spending the last plus years of my career working for some Servant Leadership exceptional and truly horrible bosses, the key differentiator of Leadershp for me is whether they are selfless or self-centered.
Do they see the people who work for them simply as assets to help them achieve their own goals, or Servant Leadership they consider it their responsibility to help their team grow and develop? They are not volunteers, and many top executives are paid handsomely for the work they do. The phrase servant leadership has a nice aspirational ring to it, but selfless and self-centered Lewdership more practical and useful terms for assessing leaders and how their teams perceive them.
Maybe the self-centered leader will get faster results in the short run by ordering people around — a command-and-control boss of yore — but long-term leadership tests these days are about influence and attracting and building talent. These only grow when employees feel that their leader is more interested in their development and Servant Leadership broader success of the organization than in advancing his or her own career.]
