Arnold van Gennep's familiar typology of preliminal rites of separation, liminal rites of transition, and postliminal rites of incorporation, permits detection of a more latent pattern structuring the experiences to which ethnographic researchers may be routinely subjected. During ethnographic research we must learn to recognize the subtle, invariant patterning of the seemingly random transition experiences sometimes offered us—or risk remaining liminal strangers.
