Rewatched Nov 19 , I haven't watched this since the late 's, so I'd never seen the original cut that was supposed to go out until the Legion of Decency demanded more cuts. They did a splendid job of determining what we all should not be exposed to, but not a very good one at protecting young children from exposure to predatory men of the cloth. Those cuts explain a lot, especially regarding the young boy whose death Blanche feels responsible for, and Stella's and Stanley's relationship basis. Leigh and Brando were at the height of their craft, and it's impressive to watch her classical training butting up against his method intensity. Hunter and Malden both give more subtly shaded performances, and won Oscars, as did Leigh, but Brando's was the one that marked the course that actors would take for years to come, for better and for worse, depending on the actor and the material. Blanche is such a difficult character; she's manic-depressive, as was Leigh, and there's no one there to soften the blow of losing everything.Consider, that: Film Analysis Of A Streetcar Named Desire
