To turn her back on the ordinary is the clear destiny of this utterly unconventional character. Even before she fully understands how trapped she is, her wit, canniness and untiring determination to make a go of things are idiosyncrasies that confuse and disarm the stick-in-the-muds around her. This is one reason she retains her power to fascinate and provoke, even inwhen divorce is commonplace.

Just before she leaves, she sits her husband down, meticulously scrutinises the state of her relationship with both him and society, and finds everything wanting.
