A Doll House By Henrik Ibsen
She's the woman who leaves her husband and children. The woman who slams the door. But what I love about Nora is how thoroughly inevitable her departure is from the start of her story. To turn her back on the ordinary is the clear destiny of this utterly unconventional character. Even before she fully understands how trapped she is, her wit, canniness and untiring determination to make a go of things are idiosyncrasies that confuse and disarm the stick-in-the-muds around her. This is one reason she retains her power to fascinate and provoke, even inwhen divorce is commonplace.
Just before she leaves, she sits her husband down, meticulously scrutinises the state of her relationship with both him and society, and finds everything wanting. This is a question that will be relevant for as long as people Willy and Nora in A Dolls House marginalised because of their gender — or their race, abilities, religion or sexuality. To my surprise, I discovered that increasingly this was seen as eccentric, even dissident. Is it possible that the more things change, the more they stay the same? My new play Wife is about members of two families who intersect with an actress who plays Nora across time. Most of them are queer. This is galvanising to the queer characters in Wife. Nora speaks to them, the door slam echoes down the years, and she becomes an example to them.
