Exploring the Role of Canadian Clinical NurseThe authors undertook focus groups with staff nurses and managers in Canada to in vestigate direct-care nurses' interests in formal management roles and the factors that influence their decision-making.
Factors identified in the focus groups included personal demographic factors, such as clinical experience and life circumstances; personal disposition, such as leadership skills and professional commitment; and situation, such as opportunities and the presence of mentors. Management roles were seen as positive opportunities.
However, nurses did not perceive the rewards to be great enough to outweigh their concerns. The authors suggest that support, leadership development and succession opportunities are required, as well as the redesign of manager roles. Wong C.
