What happened was that women were sold a bill of goods. Life was going to be soooo much better if they only loosened up their clothing. And their morals. The assumption was that women could find fulfillment through housework, marriage, sexual passivity, and child rearing alone. Not necessarily in that order or at the same time. So if a woman wanted to come home to a clean house, she had to take it with her to work. And eventually, her second job. The sexual revolution was accelerated by the arrival of affordable contraception.
